Mane Chic Shalonda

According to Merriam Webster’s definition, mane is long and heavy hair on a person’s head.  Me personally, I don’t think it has to be long and heavy.  If you have hair growing from your head, then I consider this to be your mane.  Chic (pronounced sheek) is defined as smart elegance and sophistication.  With that being said,
Meet Mane Chic Shalonda!

How long have you been natural?
22 Months.

What is your goal for your natural hair?
My goal is to keep my hair healthy. As far as length I like shoulder length unstretched. I really don't like detangling Lol.

How does your natural hair make you feel about yourself?
I have a confidence that I didn't have before. My hair makes me stand out and that has extended to my fashion choices.

If you could go back and change anything about your natural hair journey, what would it be and why?
If I could change anything from early in my journey it would be to not jump on every product bandwagon Lol.  I could’ve saved a lot of money Lol.

If you were to go on a hair product diet for 6 months (summer through fall) by not using more than 5 products on your hair, what products would be in your stash?
My stash would include Aussie Moist conditoner, Giovanni Deeper Moisture Conditioner, Alma Oil (hot oil treatments) and Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue

What is your staple style? Give a quick tutorial on your staple style. If you have a picture your staple style, include it as well.
My staple style is a braid out. Monday-Friday my hair is in a protective style but weekends are braid outs. I mostly do braid outs on dry hair. I add a little styling cream and put in about 22 braids. Let it sit overnight and viola. Huge, sexy hair Lol.

What is one product that you have found to have more than one use and you used it on your hair?  For example, you look at the ingredients of your favorite body lotion and decide that it can be used as a great moisturizer for your hair.
My castor oil.  I use it to seal my ends as well as to detox my face Lol.

What tips/advice do you have to share about natural hair?
Transitioning is the hard part, depending on how you decide to transition. But once you get into the groove after your big chop and find the products that your hair likes you will have so much fun watching your hair grow and trying new styles.

If you had to choose one word to describe your mane, what would it be and why?
Fabulous.

Question: Is Your Natural Hair Hindering Your Promotion?

Good Morning!  I pray that everyone had a fantastic weekend.

I have a question for you all. Do you think your natural hair is hindering your promotion?  Does it express too much about you?  Does it project that you are too radical, free hearted, strong, versatile, etc?  Even if you aren't natural, feel free to chime in as well.  I was just wondering so go ahead and drop a comment or two of your opinion.

Have a wonderful day!

Mane Chic Zakiya

I hope that everyone is having a Fabulous Friday!
According to Merriam Webster’s definition, a mane is long and heavy hair on a person’s head. Me personally, I don’t think it has to be long and heavy.  If you have hair growing from your head, then I consider this to be your mane.  Chic (pronounced sheek) is defined as smart elegance and sophistication.  With that being said,

Meet Mane Chic Zakiya!

How long have you been natural?
November marks 1 Year 4 me

What is your goal for your natural hair?
Hmm…I didn’t really think about a goal; just keeping it healthy.

Transitioning

How does your natural hair make you feel about yourself?
Honestly, since I’ve been NAPTURAL I have actually felt healthier and more confident. I feel like I have come to the point that I’m really representing my SISTAHS.

If you could go back and change anything about your natural hair journey, what would it be and why?
I actually would not have changed anything about the journey

If you were to go on a hair product diet for 6 months (summer through fall) by not using more than 5 products on your hair, what products would be in your stash?
Lolz, I actually don’t have a lot of products, so I guess u can say I’m already on a product diet. Lolz. But I would use my Hot Oil by African Royale, my setting lotion by ReNutrients and my Conditioner by Olive Oil.

What is one product that you have found to have more than one use and you used it on your hair? For example, you look at the ingredients of your favorite body lotion and decide that it can be used as a great moisturizer for your hair.
It’s my Hot Oil.  B4 I went natural I used to use it for my total body moisturizer. I even use it on my kids.  It’s good to use from head to toe and even when taking baths.

What tips/advice do you have to share about natural hair?
I still do little maintenance to my hair like I did when I had chemicals; such as getting my monthly trims and treatments.

If you had to choose one word to describe your mane, what would it be and why?
I like to call my mane NAPTURAL because it’s nappy and natural

Thanks Zakiya for sharing your Mane Chicness with us!

Have a wonderful weekend!

My Mini Twists

Good Morning!
I am currently wearing my hair in mini twists.  I put these in on Monday night.  It took 4 hours.  I am really pleased with the outcome.  I did regular two strand twists, but I made them smaller than I usually do.  Also, around the edges of my head (from ear to ear) I braided the twists first for about 1/4 of an inch then I proceeded to two strand twist.  This helps cut down on the frizziness of my edges.  The hair around my edges is really fine and it usually shrivels up into little Os once I sweat or when it is humid.  I workout during the week and I want to preserve these twists as much as possible.  That is why I opted to braid first before I twist.  Take a look at the video below for footage and pics.

Take care and have a wonderful day!

Work It Out Wednesday: Music to Your Ears

Whenever you workout, clean, cook, etc do you do it in silence?  Well, why don't you pop in your headphones and put on some music that will make you MOVE!  I know some of you probably already do this but if you don't, try it out.  Load up your MP3 player, IPod, phone etc with your favorite music and get busy!  I find that music makes my workouts more bearable especially when I know I am about to really work a certain muscle group.  I make sure to stay away from the slow jams during this time.  Hey, if you like to workout to them then go ahead, but for me I have to put on some music that gets me amped up.

Remember back in the day when you had to get up on Saturday mornings and clean?  Well, my mother use to put on the radio and we would be cleaning to everything from Motown to the songs of the 90s.

What is that one song that gets you going?

Take Care!

Work It Out Wednesday: Breathing

In the past I have always focused on my breathing during a cardio session.  But did you know that you should also focus on your breathing while lifting weights?  Your breathing can either help or hinder your progress.  Have you ever been lifting weights only to find yourself holding your breath?  This isn’t good for you.  You don’t want to walk around with blood shot red eyes and veins dilating in your forehead at the gym; so don’t hold your breath.  You could possibly experience an increase in blood pressure, dizziness, or a headache during and after you finish your exercise.
Don’t risk becoming injured just because you want to hold your breath during that last rep.  It isn’t worth it.  At times, you hold your breath unknowingly.  While at other times you know better, but you think that holding your breath during the last rep will help you complete the execution……WRONG.
You should always exhale when you are contracting the muscle that you are working out. Another way to remember when you should exhale is to exhale when the weight you are lifting is going against gravity.  Exhale through your mouth and inhale through your nose.  Remember to keep a steady supply of oxygen to your brain and muscles.

Happy Breathing!

Today's Word with Joel and Victoria: Power in Perspective

 Power in Perspective

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth”
(Psalm 34:1, NKJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

It’s easy to get focused on what’s wrong in life, what we don’t have, and how big our obstacles are. If we’re not careful, we’ll lose sight of all the good things God has done. We’ll take for granted our family, friends, health and the opportunities God has blessed us with. We’ll get so busy and stressed out that we won’t appreciate the gift of today. What’s happened? Our perspective has gotten off.
Perspective is all about how we see a situation. There’s power in your perspective because you will draw into your life what you constantly meditate on. Business may be slow. The economy may be down. The wrong perspective is, “I’ll never make it. It’s just too much.” The right perspective is, “God is supplying all of my needs. He said He would prosper me even in a desert.”
Today, I encourage you to evaluate your perspective. Choose to lift your eyes to God the Father no matter what is happening in your circumstances. Remember, as you set your perspective in the right direction, your life will follow. When you keep an attitude of faith and expectancy, you open the door for His blessing in every area of your life!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, I choose to bless You at all times. I declare that You are faithful! I lift my eyes to You because You are the source of my help, strength and joy forevermore. Thank You for leading and guiding me for Your glory. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
— Joel & Victoria Osteen

Be encouraged

I want my hair to be healthy, strong, and exactly the way God intended it!

How does your natural hair make you feel about yourself?
S-E-X-Y!!! I have never felt this sexy in my life and I felt the most beautiful right after the BC.

My BC Aka Big Chop

If you were to go on a hair product diet for 6 months (summer through fall) by not using more than 5 products on your hair, what products would be in your stash?
1.     Water 2. Eco Styler Gel (Olive oil) 3.Shea Butter Mix 4. Coconut oil 5.Giovanni Leave-In

What is your staple style?  Give a quick tutorial on your staple style.  If you have a picture your staple style, include it as well.
My staple style is the twist-outs! I section my hair in 4 sections, and spray with my spray bottle full of H2O (lol). Then, I take a little bit of my shea butter mix and apply it to each smaller section before I twist them. I continue to twist until my whole head is twisted (I always start with the 2 back sections first, then the front). Finally, I put on my satin bonnet and go to sleep. In the morning, I unravel them and go!
